septate uterus | ||

I had my daughter at almost 37 weeks. My water broke & she was breech, so a c-section was done. It was during the c-section that they found the septum. 2 different specialists have said that having surgery could be riskier than just getting pregnant again (b/c of the scar tissue that could be caused by the surgery.) They said that my successful pregnancy with no known miscarriages speaks alot!

Infertility then pregnant

10 years ago I went through artificial insem. and uterine surgery to correct a septum in my uterus. We have adopted two beautiful children and I am now about 9-12 weeks pregnant. I am so worried about scar tissue, still born, miscarriage. I want to be happy, but am really having a hard time letting myself be. Miracles Happen. Hopefully this will be one of them.

Septated Uterus-Successful pregnancies. . .
|
I just found out today that I have a septated uterus and I have two healthy children. Both delivered vaginally and at a normal weight. I did miscarry once. And after the delivery of both my sons I had to have a D&C because the pancreas didn't come out whole. My doctor thinks that was caused by the septum. Has anyone else experienced the same thing?

I am 31 years old and my husband and I (we were married in Aug.) want to start having children. Two years ago I was diagnosed with a septate uterus and was then told by the specialist that I should have a surgery to repair it before trying to conceive. I saw a different gynecologist last spring (due to a move) and he told me (without seeing my records) that a septate uterus is very common and that it is no big deal. He said it would be ridiculous to have a surgery and if I cannot handle a miscarriage he didn't have any suggestions. He also said that rarely do women with septate uterus's have miscarriages and that it is mostly a myth. The original Dr. I saw was a specialist from Mayo clinic in MN and I really trusted him. Now I feel confused. I have a new Dr. I am going to see this week but could use some insight and wisdom from people who are going though similar things.

When I was 22 I was diagnosed with bicornuate uterus. The past 7 years I thought it was bicornuate, which should not effect pregnancy, but leads to pre-term labor. My husband and I (I am age 29) had been trying to conceive for 9 months. Finally we saw a specialist from Boston who said it was probably really a septate uterus that was causing us not to get pregnant, but the only way to know for sure is by having a laparoscopy done. So, after all kinds of infertility tests, including the sonogram and HSG, we finally had a laparoscopy and he found a septum in my uterus. He did a histoscopy (??) and removed the septum and now I have a normally shaped uterus! He told us that most people diagnosed with bicornuate uterus are 2 to 1 really septate uterus. My suggestion is to see an infertility specialist and tell him/her you were diagnosed with septate uterus WITHOUT having a laparoscopy. He'll probably have you do an HSG, and then from there will determine if you need the laparoscopy or not. I wish you the best of luck!

I'm scheduled to undergo my first of 2 surgeries to remove the septum from my uterus. i'm 28 and have never been pg but my surgeon rec. i have the septum removed before i ttc. My septum is complete and i have 2 cervical openings. the width of my septum is 11 mm which seems wide to me. I've had the hsg/ultrasound/exploratory laparoscopy. This surgery is also hysteroscopic/laparoscopic which should decrease my risk of developing scar tissue. When the two surgeries are done I should have one uterus and one very large cervix. I'm wondering if anyone who's had the septum surgery has had to deal with cervical incompetence after while pg?? My MD said it's better to remove the septum to increase my chances of becoming pg and deal w/ the large cervix later. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks.

Hello,
My name is Sheila I am 21 y/o. I just lost my first child. I went to the ER because of bleeding and I got a Pelvic exam and they were concerned about a tender spot and I got an ultra sound and the baby didnt have a heart beat. So I had to get a DNC to remove the baby and Placenta. My doctor found out that I had a septum in my uterus. This was my first child. I am going to get the septum removed after I have my 6 week check up. I am soo scared I can't have anymore babies. I am soo sick and tired of being blamed for loosing my child there wasnt anything that could be stopped only a way to prevent it. |

surgery? | ||

Hi! I found out several years ago that I have a septate uterus. The septum extends to the cervix and slightly into the vagina. I was told then that I might have to have surgery in order to prevent a premature birth. I was never told about the possiblity of miscarriages. I just married. I was a virgin at the time of my marriage, so I never knew of the complications of this condition with intercourse. Intercourse is difficult and sometimes painful and my doctor attributes this to the septum. Has anyone else experienced this? Also, I'm thinking about having the surgery now before ttc in order to avoid miscarriages and eliminate the discomfort of intercourse. Does anyone have any advice?

and I had a healthy baby girl born at 37 weeks via c-section. The bicornuate uterus was diagnosed at my 6 week appointment via ultrasound, We had no problems conceiving.
Now I am 5 weeks pregnant with my second child and am praying for as good an outcome as we had with my daughter. My doctor recommended against surgery after my daughter was born because I did so well with the pregnancy and have no history of miscarriage. Maria |

septate uterus | ||

Hey guys, I am 25 years old and have had 2 m/c (one at 10 weeks in April 2002 and one at 19 weeks in March 2003). I was originally diagnosed with a bicornuate uterus by my OBGYN during my second pregnancy. She told me not to worry about it, that it shouldn't affect my pregnancy other than maybe preterm labor or breech birth. Well after my miscarriage she referred me to a reproductive endocrinologist (RE). He did a few tests (HSG and SIS) and suggested laparoscopy/hysteroscopy. He performed the surgery on Aug. 27th. Apparently I had a septate uterus with a very large and thick septum taking up almost my whole uterus and just a slight indentation on the outside (not really a true bicornuate). He removed the septum and lifted my uterus forward (apparently it was also tilted backwards). I went in for my follow up appt. yesterday and my RE feels confident that he removed the whole septum and has given me the go ahead to start trying to conceive. He said that when I get pregnant, I would go to his office for the first trimester so they can monitor my uterus, that they would put a stitch in my cervix at 12 weeks to prevent premature birth and then he would send me to a regular OBGYN. I am very excited and nervous about trying again. I am also very happy that I had the surgery. Now at least I have a better chance of having a successful pregnancy. If anyone has any questions or would just like someone to talk to you can email me at dkimmerle@yahoo.com.
Thanks, Diane |

information please....

hi! i am 21 years old and was recently diagnosed on a pelvic exam with a septate uterus and double cervix. i was later sent for a pelvic and abdominal ultrasound which confirmed the findings, and then tomorrow ia m being sent for the hsg. i have been doing some research on my own, and based on the statistics i am finding, it scares me, in the sense that my ability to carry a child with this abnormal uterus, is going to be gretly compromised. the doctor i have seen told me that she would not perform a surgery to remove the septum until after i have had several misscarraiges or still births, or some reason to have it done. my parents lost 3 children following my birth to premature labor, and it seems to me, that if i can put myself in a position to elminate some of the risk to me and my future baby....wouldn't it make sense to remove the septum and allow my body to heal years before i want to have children? as well not having to endure the potential mental and psychological marathon that overcoming several lost children would cause? can anyone out there who has had the suregery offer me advice? i am located in the northeast (boston and ny) and i need to find a doc who has seen this before, seeing as though mine had only seen one other patient with it..... thank you, please email me.

Hi, I was diagnosed today with a septate uterus and will have a lap and hystoscopy in May '04 to have a look and reshape my uterus. So glad to hear everyone's story and know there is hope!
My DH and I are TTC #1 after 18 months. How long would recovery be for a lap and removal of the septate? |

my story | ||

I was just diagnosed with a septate uterus -- this after 11 years of miscarriage (twice), preterm labor (twice) and one very normal pregnancy and delivery. i am slowly but surely losing my faith in doctors. i guess its all trial and error. anyway, now after i get surgery to (hopefully) correct this thing, i have to have a cerclage (which i had once, but due to this newly diagnosed septate uterus, failed), because i also have an incompetent cervix (due to my one and only normal pregnancy)...and then go on strict bed rest and hope for the best...getting tired...i must say...not very young either -- i am 37 years old. anyone have any thoughts on all of this?????

Re: Septate Uterus | ||

I just recently went to the dr about my problems with my menstrual cycle ... by problems I mean not having one at all!! My husband and I haven't been preventing pregnacy for almost two years now and even tho I know it can take a while I figured I should go to the dr to find out why ... he sent me to have a few ultrasounds done and it came back that I have a Septate Uterus ... he really didn't explain anything more to me, actually he didn't even tell me the name of the problem just kind of briefly told me what it was so that is why I am unable to sleep at night this past few weeks since I found out ... I wanted ... NO I NEEDED to know what this was, what I was up against. So this is why it is 12am, my husband is sound asleep and I am here online looking for answers. I searched everything and was just about to go to bed when I found a site that told me about my problem ... then I found this site and I am happy to have someone else around that I can talk to and ask questions. People who are going through and have went through the same problems ... I mean maybe it was because he was a man or he is just trained to be the way he is but I think that Dr should have sat down and told me the name of my problem at least!! but oh well ... now I have you guys ... I am so scared. I am waiting everyday for the phone to ring so I can go see the fertility specialist ... I can't wait to fix this problem and finally have a child of my own. It just takes so much strength ... how did you all deal with it???!?!!!?!?!!

Honesty, I wish I had known earlier about this deformity....then I could have done all the procedures to correct the problem and then have the option to start
ttc again. I just found out yesterday after an MRI that I have this malformation and have to have a CAT scan on my other organs to check for more birth
defects, that doesn't concern me as much. I have elected to have the hysteroscopy as well because I am determined to get as much information as possible
on what is going on "in there". This whole thing has been very difficult to accept but the one thing I keep thinking is that I wish I knew before
and could have started the process earlier. All those years of birth control were really unnecesary. Apparently it was a "miracle" that I conceived
once (after a year of trying) and even if I do get pregnant again naturally, the chances of carrying a baby are very slim. So, my advice to you is do
everything you can to correct the septum now, while you are healthy and then when you are ready ttc, you have way less to deal with. Anyone else out there
have this situation? One miracle conception and loss at about 8 weeks, then a successful pregnancy???
Thanks to all that pour your hearts out on here. J. |
